The topic: 'The true reason why people go buy toilet paper at times like this'
Right now, lots of Japanese people are buying a lot of products they can get from supermarkets, and a lot of them are buying toilet papers, tissue papers and things that are similar.
(Supposedly they buy a lot of toilet paper because the masks to avoid germs are made of same materials as the toilet paper)
When we are under pressure of stress (like the stress from worrying about Corona virus spreading), we tend to buy products we use daily. As a result of buying those things, we calm down a little bit.
There was a research that used accounting app to see tendencies of when people spend money.
Results are as follows:
・ People who are stable emotion-wise, they tend to spend more money at events like Christmas while people who aren't stable don't spend a lot of money at events like it.
(DaiGo-san says it's perhaps because people who are stable don't spend a lot of money unless there is an event like Christmas, and people who are unstable perhaps do impulse shopping more, so that they can't spend that much money in events like it)
・People who don't have much curiosity, they spend more in those events, while curious people don't spend much in these occasions.
(DaiGo-san says it's perhaps because curious people only want to spend money on things that they are interested in)
・Earnest people spend more money in events like those, while people who aren't earnest don't.
(DaiGo-san's view is that it's perhaps a similar case to the people who are unstable, emotion-wise. They perhaps spend money on other things so that they spend less in those events)
・Lots of people, when they feel stresses, the likelihood of impulse shopping increases.
When people fall into bad, undesirable situations that they cannot control, they tend to buy functional products that they can use in daily lives. (Like toilet paper, screwdriver and detergent)
The reason behind it is because those items make us picture solving problems.
False rumours spread when the information around the rumour is critical and also vague.
(Toilet paper disappearing from stores is fairly critical situation, and the information; masks and toilet papers are made up of same materials is kind of vague information in this case)
The reason why we feel kind of relieved when we buy those things in these situations is not because it assures you that we won't run short of the item, it is because we feel as though we got a countermeasure for the situation we cannot control(basically it makes us feel as though we got some control back).
So we can assume that when we fall into a situation with a lot of stress that seems uncontrollable, rather than buying expensive items, buying products we can use daily is advised. It'll be a pain-reliever.
