I've been doing carpentry for almost a decade now, and this is a useful video for beginners. It's called a pilot hole and it removes wood where the center of the screw goes so there is less outward pressure. Also, hit bit does a thing called countersinking so the top of the screw is flush with the surface of the wood

Just use sds screw / self drilling screw.. no need to pre drilling. Clean, tight, not breaking timber.
