This is the first time I've listened to him and I am blown away by his playing. He is one of those performers who put their persona aside and try to convey to a listener the essence of the composition they are performing. And to Piotr it comes naturally, which is so appealing. Combination of Russian pianism and Polish sensitivity and rooting into Chopin's music does wonders. Little things like the clearest and cleanest finale of sonata in this competition, impeccable style and rhythmic intricacies in mazurkas and polonaise add to the picture. This man can actually win it.

It's so interesting. The contestants are all really elaborate pianists, but like Piotr, when he plays, I see a vision. It's like I have been looking at an image believing it's 2D, and suddenly I realize that was actually a 3D. Bonne continuation!

A top student from the Fryderyk Chopin Institute — truly outstanding! His understanding of the mazurka is something that non-Poles cannot truly grasp. 就好像我家爷爷和父亲两代人留学北京一直在学京剧,可是在孟小冬老师看来,纯种安格鲁撒克逊人的父亲,总是“差了那么一点点味道”。无法用语言形容,Beyond words!!!(*o^);

Piotr Alexiwicz is very good!
A lot of people suspect that Piotr Pawlak was not qualified as a finalist not because of his playing but because of his baldness. The judges don't just listen. There seems to be unspoken rules about how a winner should look like.

Everybody is playing Sonata 2 this year, no 3. Was the latter excluded as being overplayed? I actually think sonata 2 is more artistically complex with more interpretive challenges and room for individuality and range. B-minor sonata is perhaps a greater masterpiece, but has fewer and shallower artistic choices. Is that the issue?

2025/10/17 8:50
I sincerely respect the effort it took to come this far. Still, was that really a performance fit for the third round and the finals? I can’t help wondering if things would’ve been the same without his being Polish. It’s hard to accept, knowing that another pianist might have deserved that place.

A pretty good musician- no doubt about that. Great performance!
But I will never ever understand why the Chopin -"ambassador" of Poland, maestro Piotr Pawlak didn't make it to the final....
A "chairman" of this "jury", Garrick Ohlson gave another interview today and suddenly he feels "exhausted" just to announce 11 fuckin' names. The truth is he felt ashamed to justify why Piotr Pawlak didn't make it. This "jury" is a joke!
But the Warsaw-"competition" has a long tradition in kicking out top musicians.
I want to recall genius Ivo Pogorelich who was kicked out of the competition in 1980 and the famous Martha Argerich ( who called Popgerlich a genius) together with Paul Badura-Skoda resigned from that "jury".
The other genius, the Russian-American musician Alexi Sultanov only reached the silver medal.
Daniil Trifonov won the gold medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition ( and they always require way more than only Chopin) and in Warsaw, the "specialists" of the "jury" gave him the 4th prize...
My suggestion:
Relocate this competition to China and vote for a "chairman" who feels not "exhausted" from just listening.
