Ladies and Gentlemen, curious people of all nations, madness has struck again, thus here we are.
After many trials, Kiwami finally succeeded in making a chocolate knife, but how did he do that ?
actually that’s pretty easy by now, he sort of “succeeded” in a previous video, but now he wants more: he want a chocolate knife that doesn’t get disgustingly filthy and full of bacteria. For that he will include silver in the build : silver ions are toxic to pretty much everything, but humans are somewhat more tolerant to it for unknown reasons. It’s still toxic to us, but less.
okay, so he obtained his silver in the form of this weird paste that is 99.9% silver, it says “clay” but that is an indication of how fine the silver particules are. Generally speaking rock, gravel, sand, and clay are all the same thing, but indicate different granule sizes. In normal speech that also imply what material we’re talking about, but as you should know there’s no such thing as “normal” on this channel. By the way, I’m pretty sure this thing is intended to be painted on pottery before firing them, but I cant be certain.
So he wants to make silver bars for electrolysis, to achieve that he just dries some of the paste, then melt down the silver powder into small silver bars that will be used as electrodes.
now to do electrolysis you need direct current (as opposed to alternative current from the power outlet) I’m pretty sure he has better ways to obtain that than this sterling generator, but the coolness factor makes it acceptable.
He tests his electrolysis setup and some gunk precipitates from one of the electrodes. Silver ionizes in Ag+, but for some reason it doesn’t like to stay in solution and will complex with Chlorine ions (Cl-) present in tap water.
he prepares a sort of bathtub with a metal pipe going through, raises it… okay he’s going do distillate something isn’t it? the white tap thing indicate 100 ppm (parts per million) in tap water which is not surprising (I explained in a previous video, but this thing does not actually counts ions, it merely measures the electric resistance of the water, because what makes water conductive is actually mainly the ions it contains)
On one side of this bath is the tap water, in the bath goes some water too and a cold pack, none of that is really surprising but… he’s just going to get distilled water by doing that. Empty beaker on the other side, start… yep, that’s distilled water. I don’t know what else he was expecting, the white thing confirms no ions left. Wait, was it really the point?
Okay I guess, now let’s electrolyze the silver in that to see what happens and the result is… nasty. What happens is that on the electrode that is pulling electrons away (from the metal in this case), silver solubilizes in Ag+ (one electron ripped away by the generator, electrons are negative) and goes in solution. And on the other electrode (the one that gives electrons to whatever wants them) well you have the opposite: Ag+ ions that touch the electrode return to their metallic state with total disregard for any sort of esthetic consideration.
To prevent that from happening he prepares a resin bridge that will capture all Ag+ ions that would try to reach the other electrode. If you’ve followed the previous paragraph correctly, you should be asking “but then where do the electrons go then?” and indeed you would be right to ask that. The electrons are forcefully given to water molecules, that break up to form hydrogen gas (H2) and hydroxide ions (OH-). Because solutions must always be electrically neutral, those hydroxides will swim toward the other compartment through the resin bridge. The bridge doesn’t stop them because it is likely specific to positively charged ions. If neither could pass the whole electrolysis would not work because that would be equivalent to an open circuit. Btw, hydrogen gas is explosive, so don’t forget to stream yourself in direct if you want to do the same thing at home.
After all that, he has two solutions: one is just plain distilled water, and the other contains both Ag+ ions and OH- ions. These do not complex, and precipitate like with sodium because nature is complicated. By the way you now that Silver reacts to light right? that’s what made photography possible in the first place, if we except this wacky tar-based thing some French guy did in 1827. Anyway that’s why the solution turns slightly yellowish when exposed to UVs. There has to be some sort of chemical reaction occurring here, but we’re supposed to have only silver ions, and OH- in this soup so there’s not much to react with. I’m going to assume that there is some reaction with the plastic of the cup, which seems likely enough. I tried to dig a bit more but to no avail. He boils the water off to recover pure silver but again the result is fairly nasty. He says that’s just silver, but I’d bet it is actually silver hydroxide.
He tries something different now: he doesn’t want the silver ions to reach the other electrode, but he doesn’t want to have to deal with extracting the silver from a solution, so he decided to do his electrolysis in a gel instead of in a liquid. The red electrode starts moving but that’s because electrolyzing releases heat, that melts the gel. The result is… just as gross as usual, but he seems satisfied with it. This black stain in the gel is concentrated in silver ions, and he cans just cut out the parts that do not contains the stuff he wants.
Now let’s make a tiny biology experiment! first he sterilizes some glass dishes by boiling them, then prepares some sweet agar gels to grow some microbes from different sources. He apparently did not work in a sterile environment but that’s okay, for once more filth on his dish would be just fine. Plus it’s not as if he was working with highly infectious bat viruses or anything. He puts the dishes in his homemade cardboard incubator and waits for the next day. He puts the temperature at 40°C but that’s to account for the poor insulation of his box.
his dishes display a disappointingly low amount of civilization, and he immediately reaches the conclusion that this is because his culture medium was not tasty enough. Rightfully enough he dumps a _bouillon cube_ in his next batch of medium. But then he immediately ruins one of his dishes with some nasty Silver flavored jelly.
rather than gathering new trash to inseminate his culture plates, he decides to smear some of the disgusting goop from the previous batch on the two plates, which seems an appropriate apology for forcing them to grow on bland sugar. Or maybe frustrated bacteria grow better, who knows. note that he takes good care of using a different finger for each source of bacteria, that is exactly how real professionals do their experiments.
Back into the incubator it goes, and one more day passes without my life getting any better. Now as you can see, one of the dishes looks like traditional English cuisine, and the other contains Silver ions. Which is which? well kiwami made a rookie mistake a forgot to label his countless culture dishes properly, so I fear we will never know. He has now cornered himself in a dangerous situation where he must make a wild guess based on skin color but dodges cancellation _in extremis_ by assuming the toxic thing is the one that has NO skin. Social Justice Warriors are still confused to this day.
Okay enough fooling around now, we have a knife to make. From this point he just makes chocolate from cocoa beans: roast them, de-shell them, grind them, then grind them more, then keep grind them until they beg for mercy or until your sick impulses are satisfied.
apparently removing some of the cocoa butter is necessary for the next step, and for that the only solution is to use a centrifuge, sadly Kiwami wanted one for Christmas but accidentally send the letter to SATAN instead of Santa. Oops.
He then recovers the precipitated which is essentially low-fat low-sugar chocolate, so plain cacao I guess. Add some of the Silver jelly and melt everything together to see what kind of material that makes.
Apparently the result is pretty sturdy, what likely happened is that by heating this stuff, all of the organic compounds present were forced to tangle and react together in a hot chaotic mess that is now more akin to some weird bioplastic than actual chocolate. And by now you know the drill: tangled mess of molecular strands when dried often result in a very hard material. That said it is still largely organic in nature, so it may mold and rot. Or it would if it wasn’t full of silver ions.
Now he just makes a larger sample of it and makes sure it doesn’t warp while drying, and he can make a knife out of it!
you can sort of melt it back, but really, don’t eat that.
